Shippin’ Out to Anywhere, U.S.A.

by Candice Ann Moraga

Guess I’ve been here before
It’s starting to look familiar
Different location – same place…
Always seems to be the same presences intermingling

I feel myself thinking out loud, onto my paper…
And God is eavesdropping, as usual…
Am I keeping God up night again?

I’m the nocturnal being, keeping my lizard company again
In a few days, I’ll leave this state
I will not weep for you

I sat scribbling on the complimentary hotel pad of paper
I had already mentally departed
It wasn’t a joint or a bottle that put me in this state of mind
But this ship has already sailed

It’s a familiar place
A dimly lit room and a restless mind
I will not rest until I find my safe harbor
I’ll keep searching even if it means drowning first

The blood of explorers and conquistadores courses through my veins
This sea-faring vessel looks to yet another port for a HOME

Determined to weather high tides and mighty storms
Beaten by the rage of the oceans she sails
Yet still afloat
